Howard Dean apologizes to the Veterans
During a Tuesday night appearance on MSNBC’s “Hardball” with Chris Matthews, former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Howard Dean apologized to veterans for saying that people who go see the movie “American Sniper” are “angry.”
“I’m going to do something which I’ve almost never done in politics. I’ll apologize to the veterans,” said Dean.
“American Sniper” is an Oscar-nominated movie that is based on a book about former Navy Seal Chris Kyle’s time in the military during the Iraq War.
Kyle’s description of the Iraqis as “damn savages” and his comment that he “loves” killing have led to some like Michael Moore, Bill Maher, and Seth Rogen questioning if the movie is propaganda meant to pander to the far right.
Dean, who appeared on Maher’s show “Real Time with Bill Maher” last Friday, said that he believed a certain segment of the American population are “angry,” and that a “cross-section” of that segment is made up of Tea Party voters.
Dean’s comments drew the attention of actor Gary Sinise who wrote that Dean should not generalize everyone who sees the movie as “angry.”
People Magazine quoted Sinise as saying, “I saw American Sniper and would not consider myself to be an angry person. You certainly have a right to make stupid blanket statements suggesting that all people who see this film are angry, but how is that helpful sir?”
Dean told Matthews that he had had several conversations with others about the movie and that he “was wrong” to voice his opinion about the movie without first seeing it.
“-I do apologize to the veterans. We owe them a lot and I think this movie was much more nuance than I had thought.”
Dean did say that he was not going to apologize to the many people who tweeted him “nasty language” about his views.
He also reiterated that he has the up most “respect for the people who serve this country” and that his apology is for them and not the “Chicken hawks” who littered his twitter account with a tapestry of curse words.
